"I taught a lot of kids how to sprint,
but I never seen a child amputee join in the sprinting lessons among the normal kids. I hope I can have a chance to encourage and support any child amputees to run on a blade."
The project of launching Blade library has been started with this simple idea from a para-athlete. Our wish is to create a world where amuputees can feel the joy of running by removing the obstacles such as expensive prosthetic running blades, limited facilities for running with the blades and lack of knowledge and information about the running blades.
The concept of “Blade Library” is created by a group including prosthetists, prosthetic engineer and para-athletes. Blade Library was opened in October 2017 with the support of 631 people through crowdfunding. Currently, we have 24 types of prosthetic running blades, 6 knee joints, and various alignments. Amputees can rent a blade easily like renting a book from the library and try out the blade on the adjacent truck. Please feel free to visit Blade Library if you are interested in running with a blade.
Main Activities
Once a month, we hold a clinic where a prosthetist will exchange running blades for amputees and provide a lesson of how to run with blade for 2 hours. Even if you are a beginner, please feel free to contact us and we will try our best to help you find a right running blade and teach you how to walk/run on it.
We also provide workshops (irregular) about how to exchange and align the running blades instructed by prosthetists. If you are able to obtain a certification issued by Blade Library after the workshop, you are free to exchange running blades by yourselves.
Even we are based in Tokyo, we also provide on-site service within Japan called Mobile Blade Library to dispatch experienced prosthetist and para-athletes along with multiple types of prosthetic running blades, knee joints and alignments. How do you use Blade Library ?
Blade Library is available for any amputees who can exchange running blade by themselves. If you cannot/not confident in exchanging running blades by yourselves, please come and join Monthly Run/Fitting Workshop, we have prosthetists to teach you how to exchange/align running blades. For detailed, please refer to the following terms of service and how to use.
General Provisions
Blade Library is a place where professionals with various backgrounds get together and learn from each other to support amputees running with prosthetics blades. For users*, please obey the following terms of use. (We call users as certified prosthetists/orthotists, physiotherapist, amputees and any visitors)
For the injures or accidents occurred in Blade Library, we will NOT take any responsibility on it. We need you sign the agreement of use before you use the facility.
A daily rental fee of blades, knee joints and other parts is 500 yen(tax included). Addition to it, facility usage fee for Running Stadium is required.
As the number of blades, knee joints and other parts is limited, please note that we serve the users on a first-come, first-served basis.
Users’ personal data is strictly managed by Blade Library. Only when we obtain user’s consent, we will share user’s personal data with other users for user’s own purpose.
Running track is a public place, please give way to each other when running on the track.
To amputees
We don’t guarantee that you are able to run even though you come visit here. It depends on how hard you learn and mark efforts on your training. Please set up your own goal according to your symptoms and activity level, be positive and try harder.
To healthcare professionals
You are not allowed to solicit patients or hand over your business cards. Even when you would like to make a new proposal to the user, you should communicate through the health care provider who in charge of the user. Besides, we hope Blade Library can be a place where you can positively learn and exchange experiences and opinions from each other.

For users who have read the terms of use and signed the agreement can use the facility. For amputees who would like to use the prosthetic blades, we provide 3 rental ways which is Weekly Run, Monthly Run and Daily Run (during the open hours of the facility). A daily fee is 500 yen for blade rental, plus facility usage fee for Running Stadium (500yen per day or 2000yen per month and 20000yen per year).
Weekly Run
Target:
Amputees who have no issues with running
Open hours:
once one-two weeks, weekday evening.
The users must make pre-registration via website (https://bladelibrary.jp/contact/) and come along with your own PO. Your PO need to adjust the blade for you, then you can try out running on the track. Please return the blade before you leave the facility.
Monthly Run
Target :
Amputees who have no issues with running.
Open hours:
once a month, weekend afternoon
The users must make pre-registration via website (https://bladelibrary.jp/contact/). On the day of Monthly Run, the users can come by themselves as we have PO who is able to adjust the blade. Then you can try out running on the track. Please return the blade before you leave the facility.
Daily Run
Target:
Amputees who can exchange the blade on their own and approved by us.
Open hours:
during the open hours of Running Stadium.
Please inform us of the date and the blade type which you would like to use via bl@bladelibrary.jp in advance. On the day you visit, you can install, adjust the blade and then try out running on the track. Please return the blade before you leave the facility.
Users except amputees
People such as prosthetist or physiotherapist, and anyone who is interested in running blades are welcome. We need you sign the agreement of use before you use the facility. If you would like to visit on Weekly Run or Monthly Run, please contact our staff via bl@bladelibrary.jp in advance
